We Are More Than What We Eat

We too, are animals. Bipedal animals that also require a balanced eco-system to remain healthy and thrive. Where our protein comes from, what it eats, how it’s treated, and how it arrives in our hands are often ignored or forgotten aspects of our daily diet and natural symbiosis with the natural world.

Our ancestors lived in harmony with these now invisible aspects in our modern-day food chain. Early human life centered around their prey’s migratory patterns. They cherished the land in which these animals lived, and their behavioral patterns even dictated their own migratory patterns. It is a biological and spiritual connection all omnivores shared, and one now lost to time and convenience.

EPIC products are inspired by the simple yet powerful diets of our ancestors and our unique evolutionary biology. Throughout the majority of history, our species has evolved living active lifestyles and consuming a Hunter and Gatherer diet rich in high quality meat, wholesome vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds.

Today, we are beginning to see the impact our broken connection with our food has on the land as well as our health. Short-cuts to our plates led to almost irrevocable abuses of our pristine lands and even the animals themselves. A hard truth EPIC is working tirelessly to address with convenient food made with how our bodies were meant to eat in mind.

One of my favorite EPIC products is their Beef Sea Salt and Pepper Bar. A good source of protein made from 100% grass-fed beef and simple spices. It boasts 11 grams of healthy protein and only 3 grams of carbs. Paleo-and-keto friendly, this bar makes for a potent morning option at camp, an afternoon boosting alternative to empty calorie junk-food while glassing for hours on end, and a quick add to dinner while breaking an ungulate down by headlamp. I carry a handful of these in my pack every time I’m out in the sticks. Easy to open and consistent in flavor and quality, I always know they will help fuel me between meals, and in a not-so-indirect way, that I’m doing my small part to reconnect with the way my ancestors ate through food made the way nature intended.

A man of many good deeds, he’ll be the last to boast about them. This humility is somewhat at odds with the Dan Moultrie in front of a camera marketing a new deer feeder, the Dan Moultrie sitting proudly beside a lifetime buck, or the Dan Moultrie who has appeared on television shows with legendary football coaches or outdoor celebrities.

Part four of the Modern Huntsman x Lone Star Outdoor Film series. Waterfowl hunting creates a bond among friends that’s difficult to replicate. You could say the same about being a ship captain. This film is about both and follows our old friend John Dunaway as he shares his love for waterfowl, conservation, and hunting community on the Texas coast. We’re excited to tell more stories about those who care so deeply about wildlife and wild places in the Lone Star State, and hopefully, you find some inspiration within the adventure.
