Volume Fourteen

There are two ways to spread light: to be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it.”  – Edith Wharton

Since the outset, one of the primary missions of Modern Huntsman has been to curate inspiring stories and interesting people. We have sought out diverse creative talent, fresh perspectives, good conservation news, and epic tales of adventure, danger and resilience. Our aim has been to find art from the field, and as Pulitzer Prize–winning author Edith Wharton eloquently put it, be a mirror that reflects the light.

Volume 14 includes 224 pages of stories, art and photographs with that goal in mind including:

  • Nat Geo Explorer Ronan Donovan shares new photographs and a meditative essay on public lands and our custodial responsibility for wild resources.
  • Byron Pace reveals the collaborative project to support bison conservation and evolving food systems in the Kodiak archipelago of Alaska “Our connection to nature is the foundation of all human life. Our drift away from this connection was slow at first, but it has escalated as technology advances.”
  • Cameron Evans investigates the long-term pollution effects of mining on the Elk River between British Columbia and Montana.
  • Luke Oppenheimer revisits Kyrgyzstan and puts his lens and pen to work updating the fight by shepherds and the community to save livestock from wolf attacks.
  • Editorial Director Chris Dombrowski interviews Director Scott Ballew about his recent film “All That is Sacred,” a short that dives into the 1970s fly fishing culture in Key West with Tom McGuane, Jim Harrison, Jimmy Buffett and Richard Brautigan.
  • Wild Food Editor Jesse Griffiths visits with acclaimed chef Yia Vang, discussing his ties to his ancestors, and the deep love for cooking which has led to awards for his Hmong cuisine. “His connections deepen our own; his story is just one of the millions that should be regarded as a fundamental American story. His family fought communists and survived years in a refugee camp before moving to America, and excelled through grit and their wells of agricultural knowledge.
  • Advising Editor Terry McDonell catches up with his old friend Andy Anderson about a long and storied photography career that few, if any, will ever match.
  • Ukrainian farmers and land managers on the front lines speak to the difficulties of maintaining food supplies & agriculture in the heart of war.
  • Tales of success with caribou and Dolly Varden in the Alaskan arctic, fishing for piranhas at night with a machete in the Bolivian jungle, and an adventurous bush-plane moose hunt that almost went awry.
