Modern Huntsman Cookbook Release With Eduardo Garcia

After our editorial team spent three years working on our first cookbook, we wanted to launch it with both purpose and style. While it was difficult to choose from our all-star lineup of culinary contributors, we thought it was fitting to partner with long-time Modern Huntsman friend and contributor, Chef Eduardo Garcia. It’s also difficult to find a more beautiful setting than Montana in the summertime, especially with the mountain views that you get at Bodhi Farms.

In addition to our other partners, whom you can read more about below, we’d like to thank Benchmade Knives, with whom Chef Eduardo is an ambassador, for being such a big part of the evening and for helping bring this film to life.

A look back at our cookbook launch dinner with acclaimed Chef Eduardo Garcia and the Modern Huntsman team, hosted at Bodhi Farms in Bozeman, Montana. As part of our ongoing Wild Food Series with collaborating chefs, a multi-course meal was served that featured a then-recently harvested bison from our friends at North Bridger Bison. With wild game, foraged ingredients, and a Montana-inspired presentation, each course spoke to the book's themes: sustainability, stewardship, and the beauty of a life lived outdoors.

Eduardo is renowned for his creative use of responsibly sourced meat and vegetables from Montana, and given his long-standing friendship with Matt Skoglund, the owner of North Bridger Bison, it was a meaningful presentation of recipes from the unique chapter of the cookbook.

The event featured wines from Passalacqua, and owner Jason Passalacqua and winemaker Jess Boone were in attendance to discuss their commitment to pairing wines with wild game. You can read more about them in our Volume 15 Watering Hole Feature. There were also readings from MH Editorial Director Chris Dombrowski and Jamie Harrison of their essays from the cookbook.

The intermittent rain did not dampen the guests' spirits and only added to the drama of the surrounding mountain vistas as the skies grew darker and the fire pits grew warmer. It was a worthy celebration of our first cookbook and a night to remember.

Thanks again to our partners at Benchmade, who ensured we had plenty of knives in the kitchen and on the table. Some lucky guests event went home with one.

This event could not have been a success without the support and collaboration from our friends at Bodhi Farms in Bozeman, Montana. This gorgeous 35-acre property houses a farm that supplies their restaurant—and our dinner—a resort, an outdoor event space, and unique Montana-style lodging options. The world-class hospitality team there, as well as the owners, Rayner and Tanya Smith, helped us deliver something truly special. 

North Bridger Bison

A bison was slaughtered specifically for this dinner via our friends at North Bridger Bison, who were also present at the dinner. Guests heard from Chef Eduardo about how each part of the animal was used in the dinner and about the rangeland practices NB Bison adheres to. 

Passalacqua Winery

Select wines from Passalacqua Winery were paired with the meal, and guests had the opportunity to speak with the owner and winemaker about their passion for hunting, fishing, and wild foods. Being direct to consumer, anyone who enjoyed the wines, each of which has a suggested wild game meat pairing on the back of the bottle, was able to place an order that evening. It's been an honor to work so closely with the tight-knit Passalacqua family, and we look forward to pouring you a glass soon.

Turtlebox Audio

Since many of our events are outdoors, we've partnered with Turtlebox to ensure that our team, the music and guest readers are heard. We also didn't have to worry about the rain that refused to stop for 48 hours. These speakers are completely waterproof, built as tough as they come, and are loud as hell. We couldn't think of a better option for a shared outdoor experience that kept the good times rolling well into the moonlight.
