Josh Murphy is an Emmy award-winning producer and director. He co-produced THE RIVER WHY (2010), produced HERE ALONE (2016), which won the Best Narrative film at the Tribeca Film Festival, and was a contributor to Academy Award winner Alex Gibney’s film THE INVENTOR (2019) about Elizabeth Holmes and the failure of Theranos. He directed, produced, and co-wrote the multi-award-winning feature documentary ARTIFISHAL (2019) that was commissioned by Patagonia founder and owner Yvon Chouinard, directed PURPLE MOUNTAINS about legendary snowboarder turned climate activist, Jeremy Jones, and directed THE SCALE OF HOPE that won the AICP award for Best Branded Film and is now archived in the permanent collection at the MoMA.
He recently won an Emmy for the Netflix Original series YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT: A Twins Experiment, and is co-directing and producing a film for Netflix about plastics and human health with Oscar winner Louie Psihoyos (THE COVE, RACING EXTINCTION, THE GAME CHANGERS) and co-founded LAND AND SEA FOR ALL—a non profit whose mission is to connect people and planet through better storytelling—and is directing and producing a number of impact driven films that focus on direct action at the nexus between mission aligned brands, nonprofits and foundations.
His focus on impact-driven narratives that land at the intersection of humanity and the environment continues to animate his filmmaking. Jacques Cousteau was his childhood idol, and through him, he discovered a love for film and the environment.
